Educational Alliance for Consensus on Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) is an integrated, curriculum-based, PI-CME initiative that will allow participants to access a variety of learning formats, tools/resources and best practice guidelines specific to the diagnosis and management of Major Depressive Disorder.
Over a period of 24 months, participants will have access to The Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD) Performance Improvement Program, virtual clinics, and e-toolkit. The PI component will allow participants to assess their performance by selecting to either complete a Screening Log utilizing patient charts or completing a Baseline Assessment Survey based on their current practice behavior. Both options enable learners to develop and implement an improvement plan based on areas identified for change, and complete post-activity assessments to impact practice based changes.
Learning Objectives
Upon conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
  • KNOWLEDGE: Understand appropriate strategies to enhance accurate diagnosis of patients with TRD.
  • KNOWLEDGE/BEHAVIOR: Implement appropriate TRD staging methods in the context of their impact on patient outcomes.
  • BEHAVIOR: Select appropriate and effective continuum of care strategies for optimal utilization of a multidisciplinary approach to TRD.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for family physicians, general practitioners, internists, physician assistants, and psychiatrists. There are no prerequisites.

There is an established need to educate healthcare professionals regarding definition, appropriate diagnosis, and appropriate staging of patients with depression that are at risk for treatment resistance.
  • Approximately 20-30% of patients with depression fail to respond to treatment with a single antidepressant drug given in adequate dosage for an appropriate period
  • Only 50% of these patients will respond when switched to another antidepressant medication
  • Patients who demonstrate treatment resistance are particularly challenging as they have increased morbidity of comorbid general medical conditions and increased rate of suicide
Through this educational platform participants will be offered clarified and updated information needed to incorporate a multidisciplinary approach for the optimal management of patients with depression.
